ACT is a mindfulness based approach at looking at our thoughts and actions. ACT is based in the realization that thoughts and feelings in and of themselves are events of our mind which do not have to determine how we lead our life. Some thoughts are useful, others interesting, and many thoughts, while accompanied by strong emotions such as anxiety, may be distressing but we can learn to observe and acknowledge them without over-attending to them. When we become able and willing to relate to thoughts in a mindful way, we can lead a life that is guided and driven by our values and will not be deterred by thoughts that can make us feel anxious or depressed. In fact, using ACT skills can allow us to pursue our goals and life fulfillment even if we feel and think we cannot do it.
